Year 6 – Zebras
Welcome to the Zebra’s class page!
We are one of the Year 6 classes and are the oldest children in the school. Our teacher is Mrs Fenwick but Miss Phillipson has now taken over as we wish Mrs Fenwick well on her maternity leave. We are well supported by Miss Turnbull and Miss McIver.
In the Zebras class, we work hard but we also have lots of fun! As a class, we are involved in lots of exciting activities every week. We enjoy working with our PE coach and we take part in dance and love to learn tricky routines too. On a Tuesday, we learn Spanish with Mrs Bennaceur and on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon we have orchestra with In Harmony.
As well as all of these exciting lessons, we also enjoy doing English, Maths, Science, History and Geography. In English, we base our learning around a class reader; this year we will be reading many texts including: ‘Walking with Witches’, ‘The Highwayman’ and ‘The Giant’s Necklace’. In Maths, we are becoming much more confident at using all four operations and are developing our problem solving and reasoning skills. In Science, we are looking forward to carrying out lots of investigations and learning about light, electricity, living things and evolution and inheritance. This year our topics for Humanities are: Crime and Punishment, Extreme Earth, Ancient Egypt and Trade and Economics where we learn lots of history and geography!
We need to remember to bring our reading folders backwards and forwards to school each day so that everyone can read in class each morning. We all feel that it is important to work on our reading at home too and try to improve our reading fluency. We have been set a challenge of trying to read 100 books before leaving primary school. Who will read the most?
In Year 6 we look forward to going on our ‘Stay Away’ in the Summer term which covers the outdoor adventures part of the PE curriculum and lets us have a night away from home.
Part of being in Year 6 is preparing the children for moving on to their Secondary education so we strive for all children to achieve their best and become confident, independent learners. We also strive to help children to learn the value of respect for themselves, others and their environment. Our PSHE and PE curriculum help us with this alongside Commando Joes.
We have access to multiple online websites to help us such as: Reading Plus, Sum Dog, Times Table Rockstars, Spelling Shed, Prodigy and Reading Theory. We love to go on these at home as well as school.
Key Stage 2 National Tests (SATs) will take place from Monday 12th May 2025 to Thursday 15th May 2025.
