Year 1 – Turtles
Welcome to Year 1 Turtles!
Welcome to Year 1 Turtles! Our class teacher is Mr Pinkney, and our class teaching assistant is Mrs Taylor.
In Year 1, children have access to play-based learning alongside more formal approaches, making full use of both our indoor and outdoor environments. We have daily English, maths and Read Write Inc. phonics sessions, as well as daily reading after lunch.
We develop children’s creativity, curiosity and thinking skills through our enquiry-based curriculum, exploring subjects including history, geography, art, design technology, religious education, PSHE, Spanish and science.
Our enquiry questions this year include:
- What makes Newcastle special?
- What is the best material for a raincoat?
- Is George Stephenson significant?
Throughout the year, our learning is enhanced through visits to different environments and places, including our local church, library, farm, Discovery Museum and Locomotion.
We have PE lessons every Thursday, delivered by a visiting coach who helps us develop our gross motor skills through fun activities both indoors and outdoors. We are also very lucky to have two ‘In Harmony’ music sessions each week, taught by specialist music teachers from the Glasshouse International Centre for Music.
At Bridgewater, we value reading and encourage every child to read at home daily to develop their reading skills and foster a lifelong love of books. We regularly share children’s favourite books from home and enjoy listening to stories together in class.
We also work closely with parents and carers, providing opportunities throughout the year for families to engage with their children’s learning in school through our half termly Stay and Read, Stay and Talk and Stay and Play sessions.
We are looking forward to a happy, exciting and enriching year of learning together in Turtles!
Year 1 children complete the statutory phonic test in the summer term.
