Year 6 – Leopards

Welcome to the Leopards class page!

We are one of the Year 6 classes and are the oldest children in the school. Our teacher is called Miss Cameron and Miss Turnbull and Miss McIver support her. On Thursday mornings Miss Sharratt teaches us. In the Leopards we work hard, but we also have lots of fun!

We enjoy a wide range of subjects and have a broad and balanced curriculum. In English, we base our learning around a class reader; this year we will be reading many texts including ‘Walking with Witches’, “The Highwayman’ and ‘Clockwork’. In Maths, we are becoming more confident at arithmetic and will develop our problem solving and reasoning skills. In Science, we are looking forward to carrying out lots of practical investigations and learning about living things, evolution and inheritance, light, electricity and the circulatory system. This year our topics are: Crime and Punishment, Our Local Area, Extreme Earth and The Ancient Egyptians. During these lessons we will base our learning on an enquiry question and carry out our own research before presenting what we have found using our ICT skills.

As a class, we are also involved in lots of exciting activities every week and like to keep busy! We enjoy working with Adam, who is our PE coach, and hope to enter some sports competitions this year. On Tuesdays, we learn Spanish with Mrs Bennaceur and will cover a variety of topics including describing ourselves, our bedroom and jobs around the house. We will also continue our In Harmony lessons and enjoy coming together as an orchestra every Wednesday afternoon. We are looking forward to performing to a variety of audiences.

Part of being in Year 6 is preparing the children for moving on to their Secondary education so we strive for all children to achieve their best and become confident independent learners. This involves children taking more responsibility for their learning at home; including reading daily and completing a variety of homework tasks. We need to remember to bring our reading folders backwards and forwards to school each day so that everyone can read in class each morning and we mark homework together to help us make even more progress in our learning.

We also have access to multiple online websites to help us such as: Reading Plus, Times Tables Rockstars, Spelling Shed, Oxford Owl, Prodigy and Education City. We love to go on to these at home as well as in school.

Year 6 is a busy and exciting year and we particularly enjoy when visitors come in to help with our learning and we are looking forward to going out on plenty trips. We may even have the exciting opportunity to go on a residential trip in Summer Term!

Parents are regularly updated with what is happening in our class on Class Dojo.

Key Stage 2 National Tests (SATs) will take place from Monday 13th May 2024 – Thursday 16th May 2024
