Year 6 – Leopards

Welcome to the Leopards class page!

We are one of the Year 6 classes and are the oldest children in the school. Our teacher is called Miss Cameron and Mrs Richardson and Miss McIver support her. In the Leopards we work hard, but we also have lots of fun!

We enjoy a wide range of subjects and have a broad and balanced curriculum. In English, we base our learning around a class reader; this year we will be reading many texts including ‘Walking with Witches’, “The Highwayman’ and ‘Clockwork’. In Maths, we are becoming more confident at arithmetic and will develop our problem solving and reasoning skills. In Science, we are looking forward to carrying out lots of practical investigations and learning about living things, evolution and inheritance, light, electricity and the circulatory system. This year our topics are: Crime and Punishment, Our Local Area, Extreme Earth and The Ancient Egyptians.

As a class, we are also involved in lots of exciting activities every week. We enjoy working with Claire, who is our PE coach, and hope to enter some sports competitions this year. On Tuesdays, we learn Spanish with Mrs Bennaceur and during Autumn term we will be taking part in forest school with Mrs Pickering on a Wednesday morning. We are also learning to play the tin whistle and will take part in Band in a Box in music. As part of our PSHE, we will be taking part in the RISE Project to discuss mental health and wellbeing. We are always busy!

Part of being in Year 6 is preparing the children for moving on to their Secondary education so we strive for all children to achieve their best and become confident independent learners. This involves children taking more responsibility for their learning at home; including reading daily and completing a variety of homework tasks. We need to remember to bring our reading folders backwards and forwards to school each day so that everyone can read in class each morning and we mark homework together to help us make even more progress in our learning.

We also have access to multiple online websites to help us such as: Reading Plus, Times Tables Rockstars, Spelling Shed, Prodigy and Read Theory. We love to go on to these at home as well as in school.

Year 6 is a busy and exciting year and we particularly enjoy when visitors come in to help with our learning and we are looking forward to going out on plenty trips. We may even have the exciting opportunity to go on a residential trip abroad in Summer Term!

Parents are regularly updated with what is happening in our class on Class Dojo.

Key Stage 2 National Tests (SATs) are currently scheduled for Monday 9th May 2022 to Thursday 12th May 2022.
